There are several transportation options in Oahu. Most of the activities and sights in Waikiki are pretty concentrated and within reasonable walking distance. However, if you would like the freedom to explore the island on your own and get out of the 'touristy' areas, we highly recommend getting a rental car. It's not necessary to rent a car for the entire duration of your trip, but it would be a good idea to get one for a few days so you can get out of Waikiki and see the REAL Hawaii! Here are your options: Taxi This is a great option if you're sharing the fare with a group of people. Taxis will take you anywhere you want to go! Taxi fares start at $2.25 for the first 1/8 of a mile and then go up in $.30 increments for every 1/8 mile or fraction thereof. If you get stuck in traffic, be aware that the meter does not stop running...it's $.30 for each 40 seconds of waiting time! Most hotels will arrange for a taxi for you, but if you find yourself in need of one, keep this number handy: 422.2222. This will get you a taxi from Hawaii's largest taxi company, THE CAB. In case you didn't know, hailing a taxi on the street is illegal in Hawaii. You're technically not supposed to, but cab drivers have been known to pull over to pick people up... Bus TheBus is Oahu's public bus system. A one-way fare costs $2.00, even if you're getting off 1 stop later or 20 stops later! If you need a transfer, make sure you ask the bus driver for one when you get on the bus. Bus schedules are available at the Honolulu Satellite City Hall in the Ala Moana Shopping Center and may also be available in your hotel (please ask your front desk). There are 4-day visitor passes that are good for unlimited rides that you can purchase at Ala Moana Shopping Center and at most ABC stores in Waikiki for only $20. Waikiki is TEEMING with ABC stores...you'll find at least one on every block! They're impossible to miss! Rental Cars A rental car is great for getting away from Waikiki and exploring more of Oahu's 'hidden' gems. Hourly parking in Waikiki can get expensive and most hotels charge a parking fee (between $8-$15 per day). And don't forget to fill up the tank before you return the car or you will get charged a ridiculously high 'fill-up fee' by the rental company! That's just a friendly reminder so you won't have to pay $5/gallon for gasoline like we did in Atlanta.. Enterprise Rent-A-Car has one of the lowest car rental rates in Oahu. A one week economy-sized rental is $163/week. If you are under 25 years of age, please be aware that you may be charged an underage driver fee of up to $50 a day. Oahu is the most 'urban' island in the state so a 4WD drive vehicle will not be necessary to get to many beautiful hiking spots and beaches! |
